On a mission to find Milwaukee's Best Bloody Mary

You say tomato, I say Bloody Mary.

Cafe Centraal – The Southsider | Bay View, Milwaukee

I feel like my quest for the best will be never-ending in a city like Milwaukee. If you’ve never been, you’re missing out on a lot… and when I say “a lot”, I mean the bars. They’re everywhere. Someone once told me Milwaukee houses the highest number of bars per capita. If that’s not true, I’d believe we have to be number two on that list.

We’re home to some awesome establishments. If you follow my site, you’ll know I’m a fan of the Lowlands Group who concepts Cafe Hollander, Trocedero and today’s feature, Cafe Centraal. What’s a better way to spend a Sunday than with friends over bloody mary’s and breakfast?

Just like their other concepts, Cafe Centraal offers four Bloodys on their menu. Since I’ve tried the Milwaukeean and Frenchie, I went with the Southsider this time around.

Here’s what I thought…

Garnish: Along with the typical Lowlands pickle spear, asparagus and bean, this came with a jalapeno stuffed olive. And, don’t forget the lemon and lime that add so much flavor… I greatly enjoy olives and jalapeno’s. Sign me up.

Spice: The menu read: Chipotle-infused Rehorst Vodka, tomato juice, hot sauce and jalapeno stuffed olives.  Unlike the other Bloodies I’ve tried through this group, the Southsider was rather bland. Was it bad? Not at all. Was it as spicy as the menu suggested?  No.  Maybe I was expecting more since the other two are easily in my top five. You could tell there was some seasoning in it, but I didn’t see any ‘floaties’ that I typically look for. Although it was bland, it didn’t taste just like tomato juice poured out a can.  I couldn’t taste the smokiness of the chipotle or the spiciness that I was searching for.

Chaser: This came with a chaser of something!  Forgive me for forgetting. It was included with the price of the bloody though and it complimented it well – whatever it was.

Buzz: Not today, friends. To go hand-in-hand with the bloody, Cafe Centraal has awesome food. I left rather full and more sleepy than when I woke up.

Cost: $8.00.

Overall: I’ll be going for a different Bloody when I’m at a Lowlands establishment.  This particular visit will not deter me from visiting again though.  I’m a big fan and it’ll take a lot of convincing to prove otherwise.

The Frenchie seems interesting. We’ve never seen a Bloody made with Dijon mustard, but could totally get behind that.
