You say tomato, I say Bloody Mary.
Love it or hate it post-2013-management change, I like The Palomino. Amongst the sea of places in Bayview, it’s not my absolute favorite but it’s close to home and has a nice patio. There’s something about hanging overhead lights on a summer night that is just so pleasing. One of TJ and I’s first dates was at the Palomino so it has a forever nostalgic feel for me. Not sure if their patio is still dog-friendly but… I hope so.
Their brunch menu has some pretty hearty meals like biscuits and gravy, brisket hash and corn cake. But what drew us in was the chicken and waffles. Yes, we’re still on a chicken and waffle quest since Beta closed in 2012. You know I had to try the bloody mary while there.
Here’s what I thought:
Mix: They have three bloody marys on their menu. I didn’t realize it as the server was really quick to our table. Since I like spicy, he recommended the Chipotle mix. Well guys, this doesn’t happen very often but I wasn’t a fan of this one. Don’t get me wrong, it was fine. It just wasn’t my cup of juice. It was on the thinner side, tasting like watered down tomato juice. The color alone showed it had been watered down – a mix between red and orange. There wasn’t much spice in it for being their “spicy” mix. Always, I go in with high hopes. Some guests of The Palomino will love it, I’m sure. It might be a good start for non-bloody mary lovers. I always want to find the best bloody mary but I’m sad to say, this one won’t be bumping anybody out of the running.
Garnish: I loved this garnish! It redeemed a lot of points for me. The (what seemed to be) homemade jerky was spicy and tough. After soaking in the tomato juice, it was so good. It had okra, and slices of red and yellow peppers too. Very different and good!
Chaser: This came with a pony High Life. Taking my beverage count to four (Bloody, chaser, coffee + water). Fact: I tried drinking all 50+ ounces and failed.
Buzz: I was thinking since the Bloody was on the watery side, it was because of the vodka content. I was wrong. Even after my gigantic plate of eggs and hash browns, I didn’t catch a buzz.
Cost: I totally failed in this category – sorry guys! I forgot to look and it’s not listed on their online menu. When you try it for yourself, it will be a surprise! Yay!
Bottom line: Try it for yourself. I’m giving it the benefit of a doubt. Maybe I got the leftovers from the night before. Maybe I had a new bartender. Maybe… just maybe. Regardless if I prefer or dislike a certain bloody, I still encourage you to try it yourself because who cares what I think. And… go get some chicken and waffles! You know you want to!
